Walter Tosto broadens its range of activities in the innovative sector of bioplastic, which is expected to be the natural alternative to the production of polymers derived from petroleum. The company has in fact been chosen by Bio-on as a partner for the construction of a first plant in Castel San Pietro Terme (BO), worth € 20 million, where biodegradable plastics will be produced for the cosmetics sector.
Unlike other plants producing traditional plastics, natural bioplastics are made in the Bio-on plant thanks to a process that starts with industrial waste like the molasses remaining from the production of beet sugar. Inside the large fermenters (reactors) manufactured by Walter Tosto, billions of non-pathogenic bacteria feed on this material, synthesizing the bioplastic within them according to a natural process patented by Bio-on. The result is a 100% biodegradable plastic which applications can be found in several sectors: from automotive to electronics, from food and beverage packaging to fibers used in the textile industry.
Walter Tosto supplied Bio-on with the first plant, equipped with two reactors worth 2,8 million euros for the production of biopolymers (PHAs). Furthermore, Bio-on is signing license agreements for the transfer of its technology to produce biodegradable plastic in many countries of the world. Each complete plant needs 10 reactors and Walter Tosto is preparing to face the promising worldwide demand for the installation of these new reactors.
At this purpose, Walter Tosto is diversifying its production line, creating a special division for biotechnology aimed at industrial and pharmaceutical applications. The "good" chemistry is the future of the planet, and participating in this challenge is important not only for the economic return, but also because the Tosto Group will become the protagonist, along with Bio-on, of a supreme social mission.

The 300 tons Vacuum Column shipped from Ortona on April 27 has finally arrived to its destination in Mozyr, Belarus.
The column travelled by vessel from Ortona to Kherson, Ukraine, where it was transhipped to the barge.
The operation was long and very delicate, because due to high level of water, very atypical for this period, the quay was completely under water. In order to pump out the exceeding water, a double dam was created and after the mooring and transhipping phases, the barge sailed on the Dnieper and Pripyat’ rivers.
It arrived to the Mozyr Jetty, where the cargo was rolled out of the barge by modular trailers and delivered to the final destination.

Critical items are the beating heart of an industrial plant. These components are essential because their malfunctioning would compromise the operation of the whole system. The factors that characterize a critical component can be the weight, the material and / or the delivery time.
We are about to complete an important critical component in our workshop in Ortona: it is one of the biggest columns ever made so far in terms of volume. The carbon steel deisohexainizer column has a diameter of almost 9 meters, a length of 70 meters and a weight of 675 tons.
It took only 9 months to fabricate it, which is a significant milestone for a column of its category, that once again allowed us to demonstrate our commitment to the customer in terms of delivery consistency. This requirement is very important in our sector, where the lack of punctuality causes huge costs for the customer company that, while waiting for the single component to be put into operation, is forced to suspend the construction activities of the entire plant.
Once completed, the column will be shipped by sea in March 2018 and will be installed in the Jebel Ali refinery (Dubai) of the big Arabian company ENOC.
The first experimental course on “Mechanic, Mechatronics and Energy – specialization in Pressure Equipment” represents our tangible commitment in the “work-related learning project”.
Luca Tosto: “Our investments in training will enable the students to acquire all the needed competences, and at the end of their school path, they will have complete skills, both theoretical and practical, in order to cover a role within an industrial company”.
For this project we made available our technicians and a dedicated area at our headquarter in Chieti, with machinery and equipment for the simulation of production processes, to guarantee high level and specific training to the students.

Generational change is a delicate and crucial moment for enterprises’ future. This process represents a fundamental step in the companies which know-how often resides exclusively in the person of the founding entrepreneur.
In the Italian business system this problem is even more important, given that 90% of Italian companies are family-owned, 43% of entrepreneurs are over 60 and every year more than 60 thousand entrepreneurs are involved in the generational changeover.
Less than a third of family businesses survive to the generational change and less than a fifth are able to overcome the second generation.
The “From Father to Son” Award, promoted by Cerif (Research Center on Family Businesses) within the “Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore”, is addressed to entrepreneurs who had the ability, dedication and passion to continue and enhance their parents’ work, by taking over the operational and strategic guidance of the company, guaranteeing its success and continuity.
Walter Tosto has been classified as a finalist of the Award. Luca Tosto, representing the second generation of the Tosto family, received the important acknowledgement in the "Young Entrepreneur" category last Saturday December 2nd at the “Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore” in Milan.

January 12th, 2017. We are in Naka, Japan, to celebrate the start of the magnetic system assembly of the JT-60SA nuclear fusion experimental reactor. The superconducting system is the heart of the reactor for the Broader Approach research project, the agreement between Europe and Japan aimed at a more rapid execution of the worldwide research program on nuclear fusion.
Italian companies, supervised and coordinated by ENEA, have brought a significant contribution in the supply of high-tech components for the project. Walter Tosto has manufactured the coil casings that constitute the superconducting magnet system. The other Italian companies are ASG Superconductors, who supplied 9 of the 18 coils, Ocem Energy Technology, Poseico and ICAS Consortium.
Among the speakers of the event, important authorities such as the General Director of the Energy Division of the European Community, Gerassimos Thomas, the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Toshiei Mizuochi, the Governor of the prefecture of Ibaraki, Masaru Hashimoto and the Director of Fusion 4 Energy, Johannes Schwemmer.
Federico Testa, President of ENEA, highlighted the importance of this project for Italy in terms of competitiveness, scientific and economic impact: "Our country has achieved a high level of excellence and innovation in this great technological challenge for safe and clean energy, which will allow us to replace fossil fuels at competitive costs".
Massimiliano Tacconelli, Manager of Walter Tosto SpA Nuclear Division, during his presentation expressed that the employment of advanced machinery and equipment but also and especially of the people who worked on the project with their expertise and commitment, have been the key for achieving this important milestone.
The JT-60SA project is in fact a significant example of international collaboration and synergy between industry and research organizations. Its completion is expected by 2019.
The President recalled the difficulties of the very first years of activities and the dedication that allowed his local business to grow up and to become what it represents today: a great, solid and recognized worldwide company. In particular, Walter Tosto has expressed his gratitude to the workers for their everyday hard work: "I know what sacrifice means and I thank you so much for what you do". Walter and Luca Tosto then paid homage to all the women of the company by donating them refined handcrafted art scarves. "When the company was founded, there were only two women, now they are almost 50, and among them there are many engineers: they all play key roles for the company", explained Walter Tosto.
After the dinner, some of the employees performed with several shows for the first and very successful edition of the "Walter Tosto's got Talent" contest: an initiative proposed with the aim to have fun together “without work clothes”. The Winners of the event were the "ìPer Group" whose members acted up with the dance "You are the one that I want" from the well-known musical Grease.
To cope with the growing energy demands of the world population, for several decades now, science and technology have been committed in the search for an inexhaustible and clean energy source that can replace fossil fuels. The research has moved in the direction of nuclear fusion that, unlike fission, does not produce any residual radioactive nuclear waste.
In this context the success of the German reactor Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) emerges, which feasibility has been recently demonstrated in an article published on Nature Communications, that also highlights the high accuracy that the technology is able to achieve.
The construction of the mega W7-X system has required 19 years of work and an investment of about 1 billion euro. The reactor works due to the confinement of a ionized gas called plasma, which is heated to a temperature of about 100 million degrees. In these conditions the electrons are separated from their atoms and ions are formed. So, colliding and merging together, they produce energy.
The W7-T belongs to the "Stellarator" type of reactor, which is very complex to build with respect than other types of nuclear reactors, so called "Tokamak", the experimental reactor of the ITER project, in which Walter Tosto is involved as part of the AMW (Ansaldo - Mangiarotti - Walter Tosto) consortium. The company is indeed manufacturing different sectors of the ITER vacuum vessel, which will be ready in 2020.

Luca Tosto’s interview
How the idea to create a motorcycle division within a company that deals with something else was born?
It all started about a year ago, during one of my trips in Russia, when me and Mihail Dave, my Russian friend and collaborator, united by our passion for bikes, laid the foundation for this project . I was already thinking to create a commonly used product, also known by non-experts in the industrial components field, to explain our business, our expertise in the machining sector and in the use of special materials. I needed an object to talk about us, explaining who we are and what we do. From here, the idea of creating our first jewel on two wheels: the Lvpvs Alpha.
How can a motorcycle explain the activity of a company which does not produce motorcycles?
Through shapes and materials: every detail of the bike talks about us. Its shapes are inspired by our artifacts and the selected materials are the ones with which we use to build critical equipment. For instance, the wheel rims reproduce the tubesheets of the heat exchangers, the handlebar is formed by a condenser’s tube, the grid that covers the fuel tank has been obtained from the inside part of a reactor, the exhaust manifold incorporates the design of a waste heat boiler and so on. We used noble and highly resistant materials, such as chromium vanadium or titanium, which weighs about half of the steel, is twice resistant than aluminum, it has excellent thermal characteristics and greater resistance to corrosion. The Incoloy 800H material, with which reactors are made of, was used for the calipers brakes, thanks to its resistance to very high temperatures, pressure and corrosion.
“Lvpvs Alpha” is the name of your first bike. Why this choice?
The wolf’s figure accompanies me since I was a kid. My father used to call me "wolf", and this remained my nickname also when I grow up. Wolves have always fascinated me for their proud attitude, their strong and brave temperament , their lifestyle within the pack, just like groups of bikers. The alpha wolf is the predominant specimen in a pack, the leader. Since this was the first bike we manufactured, the name Lvpvs Alpha seemed to fully reflect its characteristics, giving it an identity with the due importance.
Who dealt with the creation of the motorcycle?
In addition to Filippo Barbacane, Giovanni Caporrella was appointed as project manager and all our departments were involved . It was like a training session for our highly qualified departments which proved to be very flexible and versatile. And for me, it was a dream come true, and a lot of fun.
Filippo Barbacane's interview
How did you feel when you have been told to be the project leader?

The mega ship of the German company Hansa Heavy Lift (HHL) is about to leave from the port of Ortona. It docked last Monday, March 23 to carry one of the largest columns ever manufactured by Walter Tosto SpA: an 87 meters length Ethylene Fractionator C-4330.
In occasion of the important cargo and for the first berth of the ship in Ortona, Walter Tosto’s staff, together with some local authorities, including the Commander of the Port of Ortona Nicola Attanasio, the customs’ responsible of Ortona and Pescara, the Deputy Mayor of Ortona Nadia Di Sipio and the commissioner for public works, Domenico De lure, were welcomed by the captain on the HHL Lagos ship with a guided tour and a welcome buffet.
HHL’s staff explained to the visitors the main procedures and mechanisms for the loading and unloading processes, the security policies and technologies used within the impressive vessel built in 2011, which is almost 170 meters long and 25 meters high.
The loading procedures of the 600 tons Fractionator were successfully completed in the afternoon of March 24 and the HHS Lagos is preparing to say goodbye to the Adriatic coast, directed to Texas, United States of America, where the column signed by Walter Tosto will be delivered. The teams of both companies have collaborated for the organization of a day that turned out to be memorable for all participants, consolidating the already important Italian-German partnership and providing valuable insights on the importance and the great potential of the port of Ortona.
JT-60SA is a fusion experimental project designed to support the operation of ITER and to investigate how best to optimise the operation of fusion power plants that are built after ITER. It is a joint international research and development project involving Japan and Europe, and is to be built in Naka, Japan using infrastructure of the existing JT-60 Upgrade experiment. SA stands for "Super Advanced", since the experiment will have superconducting coils and study advanced modes of plasma operation.
Walter Tosto SpA has been designated for supplying 18 components (casings) containing toroidal coils of the magnetic system by ENEA (National Agency for new technologies, energy and economic sustainable development). In occasion of the finalization and imminent shipment of the firsts casings, the Power division’s staff of the company received the visit of some representatives of Fusion 4 Energy (the EU organization managing European contribution to ITER), ENEA, and JAEA (Japan Atomic Energy Agency), the company which commissioned the Tokamak JT-60SA project.
Visitors had the chance to examine the obtained results and were very satisfied for quality and tolerance strict levels compliance.
The components will be soon shipped to the companies ASG and Astom, which will place the superconductors inside the casings.
A new challenge for Walter Tosto’s team
Walter Tosto’s operational team is dealing with an item of extraordinary size.
In the Ortona seafront workshop, one of the largest columns ever built is being completed: the Ethylene Fractionator C-4330, a "tunnel" exceeding 87 meters in length, 4.5 meters in diameter and 600 tons in weight, which requested the usage of more than 250.000 bolts, 500.000 nuts and 20.000 components of several size.
Walter Tosto’s operators, who are currently working on the assembly of 147 internal plates (one every 50 cm), operate inside the huge tube with three teams at the same time, in three different areas of the column in order to reduce, as much as possible, the completion time.
Few days ago, the personnel of the company which commissioned the item, visited Walter Tosto’s workshop to monitor the execution progress. They congratulated the team for the methodical organization, the preparation of the plates on the ground and for the accuracy in assembling the internal components; these are essential requirements to fulfill the expected process results.
The equipment is expected to be completed by March 16, 2015: six weeks earlier than the scheduled delivery time (April 30, 2015) established by contract. In this regard, the client company has decided to grant an additional reward to Walter Tosto for the achievement of this very positive and unexpected result.
After completion, the carbon steel column will be shipped by sea and installed on an Ethylene plant in the United States of America.
Expanding the business abroad without plants relocation: this was the biggest challenge for Walter Tosto SpA, which, since its foundation, entirely carries out its manufacture activities in Italy, according to the made-in-Italy high quality standards, with 100% of the turnover coming from the worldwide market.
As a significant example of internationalization, Walter Tosto SpA was invited to the convention of the corporate relationship responsible with international portfolio, organized by the BNL bank at Eataly on February 12th, 2015 in Rome.
Dr. Luca Pierfelice, Walter Tosto’s CFO was glad to report the company’s contribution by interacting with the audience during the speech entitled “being international”.

Italy is one of the first countries in the world in the nuclear research field. In the last three years, Italian companies obtained contracts for more than 900 million euros, about 60% of the value of the European orders for high level technology component manufacturing, related on the international fusion research project Iter, which, for Italy, is coordinated by ENEA. (Source: Repubblica.it).
The Iter project has the purpose of generating a safe, practically unlimited, economically competitive, renewable energy source to allow fossil fuel usage reduction.
The research is based on the principle of exploitation of the huge energy quantity released by nuclear fusion reactions, in which, lightweight atomic nucleus, hydrogen for instance, merge together to compose heavier nucleus, by reproducing the physical mechanism that happens when stars burn.
The potentially interested companies are about 500. Walter Tosto SpA appears among the most important ones, by having acquired a contract, together with Ansaldo and Mangiarotti (being part of the AMW consortium), for the production of seven sections of the vacuum vessel, the Iter project’s core. Moreover, Walter Tosto SpA is involved in the manufacturing of Cassette Body, Casing for JT-60 SA and components for Inner Vertical Target.
Fundamental concepts about nuclear fusion reactions and the state of the art research on the nuclear fusion and magnetic confinement will be illustrated on February 13th 2015, during a workshop organized by the Order of the Engineers of the province of Rome, in collaboration with the research center ENEA. The technical seminary will focus on “Nuclear Fusion and its perspectives” and will take place at the ENEA center of Frascati. Walter Tosto SpA will participate to the event in order to relate about its industrial experience in the fusion area, with the intervention of Paolo Bonifazi, Business Development Manager of the company.
Walter Tosto SpA is undertaking a social responsibility path, by investing on research and human capital. Donations made to charity foundations and associations are part of this path. Thanks to the received funds, researchers, some of them returned to Italy from abroad, have the possibility to work on research activities in order to defeat the diseases which are afflicting our society.
Since years, the company is active and cares about the development and support of ethical and fundraising related projects. From 2012 indeed, several donations has been made to Telethon, the foundation which collects funds for scientific research support on genetic diseases, and from this year, the company is also glad to support Airc, the Italian Association for research on cancer.
“Ethical and social commitment is part of our philosophy. We are very proud for supporting Telethon and Airc’s projects, in collaboration with some Italian banks, not only to help the cause but also for contributing to divulge the social responsibility concept and the importance of scientific research”, declared Luca Tosto, Managing Director of the company.
Walter Tosto SpA has just received the renewal confirmation, from the ASME committee, of the N and NPT stamps related on the manufacturing of components for nuclear plants, according Section III of the ASME Code. The Survey has been performed within Walter Tosto’s workshops last October.
ASME’s team leader congratulated with the company’s staff for its organization, expertise, cooperative spirit, reliability and the high commitment with which the procedure has been faced. The members of the ASME group, by considering their long-time expertise, have been positively surprised by how an adequate preparation and training of young employees guaranteed the achievement of remarkable objectives; one of them said: “during the 5 days Survey, the feeling of confrontation to the same degree between Walter Tosto’s staff and ASME’s team has always been constant. I acknowledge that your company managed pretty well to conjugate the youth of the people employed in the different departments with the high competences which one can acquire only after working for several years in a company”.
Great satisfaction was demonstrated by Walter Tosto’s management which congratulated with the staff for the great job done: ”It was a pleasure to listen to the team leader appreciations for the company proficiency at all levels”, said Giacomo Fossataro, General Manager of the company. Mario Maresca, the Quality Manager added: “We are enthusiastic for the great result obtained and once again we will be inspired by the observations and remarks.
The AEO certification (Authorized Economic Operator) is part of an EU qualification program which applies on business operators and their commercial partners which are involved in the international supply chain (manufacturers, exporters, shipping companies, depositories, customs agents, carriers and importers) which activities are regulated by the customs legislation and positively qualify with respect to the other operators, because of their liability and safety.
The community liability and the AEO-Full status (concerning both customs simplifications and safety compliance) are recognized after appropriate verifications performed by the national customs authority (the custom agency, for the Italian territory), to the organizations which fulfill the customs duties, respect the accounting system criteria, meet the financial commitments and to comply with adequate safety rules.
After the positive audit of the Custom Agency, Walter Tosto SpA obtained the three years validity status of AEO – Full, with great satisfaction for the teamwork which managed the qualification procedures.
Among the advantages for the companies obtaining the AEO certification we can mention: customs simplifications, facilitations on security controls, reduction of data provision for security purposes, decrease of physical and documental controls, cargo treatment priority in case of control selection and fast track access for the completion of customs administrative activities.
ITER is the most important worldwide project for the development of the nuclear fusion as a viable and sustainable energy source.
It is biggest international collaboration in the field of energy, bringing together 50% of the world’s population and 80% of the global GDP.

Do you remember the items which left from the port of Ortona last July 3rd? The first two products Walter Tosto Rus, after having crossed seas and rivers, finally reached their destination.
The local Vesti Syzran Newscast (of Samara region) reported the landing phase, as you can see in the video attached below: special care and maneuvers were needed in order to move the heavy cargo, despite the new ground connection which was specifically built for heavy and oversized loads transportation.
After an intense and coordinated teamwork, the delivery has been successfully completed and the two components are now ready to be installed in the refinery plant of Syzran of the Rosneft group.
“An international, dynamic and evolving environment”. That’s what those who enter for the first time in the company’s offices perceive, by bumping into college students or visitors along hallways or departments. It happens very often that high school or university students hang out at Walter Tosto SpA. Several rooms are used as classrooms, and courses, masters and other training programs are frequently organized in collaboration with the best Italian or foreign Universities.

The trainees, at their first week in the company, express their first impressions: "This program goes far beyond our expectations. The stereotype of the student who is placed in the company to make photocopies does not have anything to do with the Walter Tosto’s scenario. The high quality training program provides effective skills-acquisition, which are relevant for the company. The context is friendly and inspiring and this solid and well-structured organization really believes in young people. For us, this represents a stepping stone to lay the foundations for our future", says Ercole Fasciani, graduated in Economics.
For Walter Tosto the new generations have always been a valuable resource; for this reason, the company is glad to provide them all the occasions they could benefit to acquire and enhance their knowledge and work experience.
In these days, several students from the Technical Institutes "A. Volta" of Pescara and "L. Di Savoia" of Chieti, and a group of students of the Polytechnic University of Bucharest, have been welcomed in the company for carrying out an internship period, during which they will be able to put into practice all the theoretical notions they have learned at school; moreover, they will have the opportunity to experience the way to operate of a company which works through a global approach, but is locally contextualized at the same time.
The High School students, after the presentation of the company and the job safety training, were included in the mechanical department and laboratory, welding and robotics department and in the ITER division, under the supervision of their respective tutors.
Students of the University of Bucharest are instead doing a period of training in the engineering and design areas, in several Italian companies. "We are here in Italy to acquire technical skills that we will bring back to our country", answered one of the students of the Polytechnic Institute of Bucharest, who added: "We are very lucky to do this experience in a technologically cutting-edge company as Walter Tosto, which is well known all around the world”. Asking the question "What do you expect after the training in Walter Tosto?" One student replied: "After the training period, definitely we will get out with an enhanced set of skills and we will be grown up, both personally and professionally".
Among the students and the company there is always an exchange that enriches both parties. Trainees have the opportunity to learn the dynamics and working principles of an important business and to lay the foundation for their future professional growth, while the company can get the chance to meet young future employees, to appreciate their curiosity and the freshness of the their ideas. The most deserving students will be indeed considered in order to be hired by the company.
